The Project

The building site, located near Cannon Falls, Minnesota is part of a forty-acre plot of land adjacent to the Cannon River that has been in my family since 1970.  A bike trail that runs between Cannon Falls and Redwing intersects the property near its northern-most boarder. The placement of the buildings was done with consideration for creating the most privacy possible for the main house and guest house.  To accomplish this, the driveway and parking lot are hidden from view of the main house.  Likewise, the guest house is oriented in such a way as to minimize the exposed view from the main house.  The composition, or placement of the buildings is a diagonal line with the buildings oriented like the steps of a staircase. The workshop is placed at the highest elevation as you enter the property, followed by the guest house, garage and main house.  Each building descends three feet in elevation in sequence. The parking lot is situated behind the garage out view of the main house–thus preventing the disturbance of approaching headlights shining into the house at night.
